RESPONSIBILITIES: The successful candidate will be expected to teach on-campus undergraduate personal financial planning courses and Internet-based and on-campus graduate courses, as well as provide service to the unit and School. Other responsibilities include directing graduate student practicum experiences, serving on graduate student program committees, advising and mentoring students, developing and managing industry partnerships, and serving on unit, department, college, and university committees.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: Doctorate in Financial Planning, Family Economics, Consumer Economics, Resource Management, Financial Counseling, or a closely related field.  Requirements also include:

Evidence of online teaching effectiveness in personal financial planning topics

Evidence of resident teaching effectiveness in personal financial planning topics

Communicating effectively, both orally and in writing

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE and QUALIFICATIONS:
·         Accredited Financial Counselor designation

Active membership in relevant professional organizations, which might include the Association of Financial Counseling and Planning Education, the Family Economics and Resource Management section of AAFCS, Financial Planning Association, National Association of Personal Financial Advisors, and similar organizations
·

GENERAL INFORMATION: Kansas State University is a land grant institution, with an enrollment of approximately 23,000 students in eight colleges and the graduate school. The College of Human Ecology has 104 faculty serving approximately 1,500 students through three departments and one school.  The School of Family Studies and Human Services is multidisciplinary in nature, consisting of Life-Span Human Development, Family Studies, Communications Sciences and Disorders, Early Childhood Education, Personal Financial Planning, and Marriage and Family Therapy.  The School consists of approximately 38 faculty, 550 undergraduate students, 200 master’s students, and 48 doctoral students.

Title:                   Assistant Professor– Family and Consumer Economics for Older Adults

Duties and Responsibilities

This is a 12-month tenure accruing position with a 70% appointment in teaching (College of Agricultural and Life Sciences) and a 30% appointment in Extension (Florida Cooperative Extension Service) available in the Department of Family, Youth, and Community Sciences, Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences, at the University of Florida. Tenure will accrue in the Department of Family, Youth, and Community Sciences. The successful candidate is expected to engage in scholarly activities related to teaching and extension. This assignment will be reviewed annually and may be subject to change in accordance with programmatic responsibilities of the unit.

The area of specialization for this position is family and consumer economics with emphasis on older adults. This may include subjects and courses such as Retirement and Estate Planning, Family Tax Planning, and Family Insurance Planning with the potential to develop new courses in the area of specialization.

The faculty member is expected to contribute to the unit’s instructional program which includes teaching undergraduate and/or graduate courses, advising and mentoring undergraduate and graduate students, participating in curriculum revision and enhancement, developing courses in the area of specialization, seeking funding for the teaching program, supervising undergraduate and graduate research and creative work, publishing teaching-related scholarship, producing learning tools, and engaging in professional development activities related to teaching and advising. Faculty are encouraged to support and participate in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences Honors Program, distance education, and international education.

The major Extension assignment is to provide leadership for the county faculty and the Cooperative Extension Service in the development, implementation and evaluation of state and county education programs, to seek and obtain extramural funding, and to support the mission and goals of FYCS and UF/IFAS extension in the areas of specialization in accordance with the programmatic needs of the state.

Qualifications

An earned Doctorate in Family Financial Planning, Consumer Sciences, Family Resource Management, Family Economics, Consumer Behavior, or closely related field is required. Doctoral candidates who meet these qualifications will also be considered. Candidates should have demonstrated skills in verbal and written communication, interpersonal relationships, grants management and procurement, and Extension program development. Candidates should have a commitment to scholarly publication. Candidates must be supportive of the mission of the Land-Grant system. Candidates must also have a commitment to IFAS core values of excellence, diversity, global involvement, and accountability. The successful applicant must have a strong commitment to teaching and Extension and a proven ability to work effectively with academic and professional colleagues and students. UF/IFAS also engages in cooperative work with Florida A&M University in Tallahassee.

The Department of Family, Youth and Community Sciences has 24 faculty located at the Gainesville campus. The FYCS program is a growing interdisciplinary undergraduate and graduate program with enrollment of about 500 students. The Department currently offers a Master’s degree with a Doctoral program under development. The unit’s sponsored research and Extension activities have generated in excess of $8 million over the course of the past year. The department’s mission is to enhance lifelong learning and the personal, social, economic and environmental well-being of diverse individuals, families and communities through state-of-the-art Extension, teaching and research programs. The Department encompasses programs in family development, 4-H and youth development, community development and sustainability, non-profit management, human nutrition, food safety and health, housing, and family and consumer economics. The Department engages in collaborative working relationships with Florida A&M University, Florida State University, and other public and private universities in the state, region and nation.

Federal Reserve Board

The Division of Consumer and Community Affairs of the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System, located in Washington DC, has two opportunities available for economists in the Fair Lending Enforcement and the Consumer Education and Research Sections.  Specific requirements for the position in the Fair Lending Enforcement Section include the development of econometric models to evaluate whether specific institutions have engaged in illegal discrimination, development of fair lending screening tools, and development and evaluation of fair lending enforcement policies. Specific requirements for the position in the Consumer Education and Research Section include the development and evaluation of proposals for consumer regulations and other policy changes in the areas of the Board's regulatory responsibilities, involving consumer testing of disclosures, experimental studies, and behavioral economics research strategies; the evaluation of regulations and policies; and the modeling of consumer financial behaviors.

Both positions support the Board’s regulatory and compliance functions in consumer credit, consumer financial services, and fair lending.  The economists will be responsible for analyzing developments in financial markets and options for regulatory decisions, developing and maintaining relevant economic data, conducting long-range research aimed at improving consumer financial markets, as well as the theoretical and quantitative analysis used at the Board and by the economics profession generally. 

Ph.D. in economics or finance required.  Three years of relevant experience is preferred, but new Ph.D.s or candidates currently enrolled in a Ph.D. program in economics or finance nearing the completion of their dissertation will be considered.  Salary is dependent upon educational background and experience.
