Three Receive Mentor Honors

Sharon A. DeVaney
Professor Emeritus
Purdue University

“I nominated Dr. DeVaney for the Honor a Mentor Award because she was there for me throughout my graduate program and continues to mentor me and others. I first met Dr. DeVaney when I joined the Department of Consumer Sciences and Retailing at Purdue University. Although I didn’t start working as her graduate assistant until a year later, she was nurturing from the start in her courses and in the hallway!”

Many of Dr. DeVaney’s former students and advisees from Purdue University joined in support of this nomination; the list was too long to put on the certificate!  With this nomination, we honor Dr. DeVaney, thank her, and celebrate her wonderful legacy.
Dr. DeVaney received her Ph.D. in Family Resource Management from The Ohio State University.  She has published articles too numerous to mention and taught well.  We try to emulate her in all of our professional activities.

Jing Xiao
Professor
University of Rhode Island

Dr. Zhou (Adam) Chen honors Dr. Xiao as his mentor.

"I came to know Dr. Xiao several years ago at an ACCI reception (Thank you ACCI!). A group of conference participants had a chat during which I vented frustrations with research and publishing as a fresh Ph.D along with several other young professionals. Dr. Xiao was particularly attentive and offered many useful insights and suggestions. Since then I have been greatly benefited from many many phone and email conversations with him. As an economist, I understand the concept of opportunity cost, which in this case means that Dr. Xiao could have used the time spent advising a person whom he merely met once at a conference on more enjoyable tasks such as his own research, doing things with his family etc. I truly appreciate Dr. Xiao for his willingness and commitment to mentor a young professional -- I probably should have used the plural form as I know many of my friends have had the same experience with Dr. Xiao. Dr. Xiao deserves an official title of a Mentor and I thank ACCI for offering this great opportunity to honor him and others alike. "

Dr. Xiao received his Ph.D. from Oregon State University. He enjoys teaching about family financial issues, family resource management, personal finance, consumer protection, and research methods. He also enjoys researching topics like Chinese consumers and families. For more information on Dr. Xiao,
